ABOUT US

In the years following Reconstruction, a Baptist Mission was fonned by a group of Afiican American believers in Trenton, New Jersey. The group first met in 1887 on Academy Street under the servant leadership of Rev. I.C. Burton. By March 1888 the group received official denominational recognition as a "church" and was given the name Union Baptist. Rev. Burton served as pastor until 1910. Following his death the congregation was served by several interim ministers: Rev. John Keary, Rev. E. Higgenbotham, Rev. Theodore Cook and Rev. J.T. Robinson.

Rev. DanieIJ. Stewart of Virginia was called as pastor in 1913 and accepted the charge in January 1914. At the time, worship services were conducted in the basement in a small structure on Belvedere Street, but God had greater things in store. The wituess of the Gospel of Christ increased church membership and necessitated the purchase of a lot and construction of a new edifice at the current Pennington Avenue Site. Construction began in 1924. It was during this time that the "Nickel Club," one of the oldest ministries of the church, was fonned. Members collected nickels to contribute to building costs. Their "mustard seed" faith was blessed and multiplied by God and construction was completed in 1927. The church building was the first to be erected ITom the ground up by an Afiican American congregation in Trenton.

Rev. Stewart led the congregation until his death in 1929. On September I, 1929, the mantle was passed to Rev. D.Y. Campbell, who served until early 1931. He was succeeded later that year in November by Rev. A.S. Grayson. A powerful and soulful preacher, Union further flourished under Grayson's pastorate. There was a significant increase in membership, the mortgage was burned and the church was completely renovated. Rev. Grayson retired after twenty-five years of faithful service.

Upon Rev. Grayson's recommendation and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Rev. Albert J. Tibbs, a fonner Anny chaplain, was called as pastor on January 1957. Under his dynamic leadership the Union Baptist Church Home for the Aged was built. He served for eleven years and was called from labor to reward on April 25, 1968.
