ABOUT US
Several associate ministers - Rev. Cleveland Cook, Rev. Henry Lewis, Rev. Charles Brown, and Rev. James Hatten -- shepherded the congregation until the church called Rev. L. Earl Tolbert as its pastor. Rev. Tolbert led the congregation in renovating the lower auditorium and in early planning and fundraising activities in preparation for a future building. On August 31, 1984, Rev.Tolbert resigned to return to his home state, Louisiana, after fifteen years of dedicated service. Following his resignation, associate ministers Rev. James Hatten and Rev. Kirkwood Hall conducted services until the call of Rev. Robert N. Dickerson as Interim Pastor 1985.
After serving as Interim Pastor for several months, Rev. Dickerson was extended the call to the pastorate in November, 1985. He accepted and was installed on January 26,1986. Rev. Dickerson led the congregation in fulfilling the vision which began with Rev. Tolbert, and the construction of the current sanctuary and educational space was completed in 1995. Rev. Dickerson resigned in November, 1995 to accept the pastorate of the First Afiican Baptist Church in Columbus, Georgia. Rev. Darrell Annstrong briefly served as Interim Pastor, aided by longtime Associate Minister Rev. James Hatten and Associate Minister, Rev. Berlinda Love.
In September 1996 Reverend Simeon D. Spencer answered the call to become Union Baptist's Pastor. He preached his first sennon as Pastor-elect on the first Sunday in October, and was installed as pastor on April 20, 1997.
Under Pastor Spencer's leadership Union has been distinguished by its prophetic preaching, Biblical teaching and fervent worship. The Church's weekly radio broadcast is consistently rated number one in Mercer Country in its time slot. Attendance has grown dramatically, resulting in the addition of an eight A.M. worship service on Sundays. While deeply rooted in the heritage of Afiican-American worship traditions, the "face" of the Union congregation is diverse. We are a community church and our diversity is reflective of Pastor Spencer's commitment to emulating Jesus' welcome for all people. He, in turn has been welcomed to preach in pulpits both nationally and internationally.
